One of Greenland’s most breathtaking ice sceneries can be found at Point 660.
Join us on this journey and embark on the ice that has been frozen for a thousand years for a once in a lifetime adventure, a setting that, although to some, may appear to be static, is actually evolving daily.
Along the Greenlandic shore, the massive ice may be viewed in several locations.
When you walk on the ice, which has a thickness of more than three kilometers, a severe chill stretches out beneath you.
A one-of-a-kind and amazing experience is traveling out onto the spectacular ice sheet.
We follow the lengthy Sandflugtsdal valley and the lovely gushing meltwater river as we go closer to Point 660.
The Kangerlussuaq golf course is the first landmark we pass, followed by a small conifer forest and the 400-meter-high Sukkertoppen rock formation, which has the shape of a cone.
The route then passes through a landscape of shifting lakes, verdant mountain heathland, and thick willow thickets, which are briefly replaced by extensive stretches of arid sand dunes and bare mountains.
This is known as a moderate landscape with a rather diverse flora in Greenland.
Despite the arid climate, there are still a number of lakes. This is because permafrost prevents water from being pulled into the subsurface. Saline lakes, which resemble desert lakes, are also produced by the dry climate.
We detour and climb the hills towards Point 660 a few kilometers before we reach the Russell Glacier, the ice sheet’s furthest protrusion. One of the most exquisite ice landscapes may be found in Greenland.
The spectacular Inland Ice Sheet, which dominates the background, and endless rows of glacier outlets, both to the north and south, greet you at this location.
We park our car at the ice’s edge and proceed into the ice sheet itself.
Note: On the journey, you’ll have to climb a few of the ice hills that were formed naturally on your own. Silt and moraine gravel will partially cover these. You should be informed that a path has been prepared, but don’t worry, your guide will carry walking sticks and spikes. The trail may also be slippery in some spots.
