The spectacular Ice Sheet is one of Greenland’s main attractions.
The Russell Glacier’s location in the Aasivissuit region is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for a good reason.
The ice sheet may cover up to 80% of Greenland, but every year this area decreases as the ice melts without replacing it with fresh ice.
The only location in all of Greenland where you may drive to the ice sheet is Kangerlussuaq.
On this excursion, we’ll travel to the magnificent Russell Glacier.
The wall, which may reach heights of 70 meters, acts as a fortress between land and ice.
If you’re lucky, you might see reindeer and musk oxen while on this journey, which allows you to encounter the fascinating animals. We start off in a Toyota Landcuiser, an off-road vehicle.
We’ll fill you up on the area’s rich history as we go.
Additionally, you can witness the melting in progress throughout our summer trip.
There will be a chance to hike alongside the glacier when we get there. You can take pictures and soak in the breathtaking surroundings here. The rushing murmur of the meltwater river is the only thing that delicately breaks the breathtaking silence.
We are up against strong forces.
The moraines surrounding the glacier provide enough proof of this.
The Kangerlussuaq Fjord is 160 kilometers long.
The name of the area also derives from this.
The name “the long fjord” is Kangerlussuaq.
You can discover grey silt, commonly referred to as glacial flour, on the ground.
Very fine sand, clay, stone, and gravel make up silt. It comes from crushed rock that was produced by the glaciers slowly moving over the mountains.
Thus, the significance of the magnificent fjord’s color is generated by this silt.
Note: Keep a safe distance from the ice columns and the meltwater river, both of which have the potential to fall suddenly. Always keep in mind that ice is an elastic substance that is always moving. But from a secure distance, you may still take part in and delight in it.
