Near the town lies the lush Sermermiut valley, which stretches down towards the icefjord with ruin remains from the former settlement of Sermermiut. With two interruptions, the settlement has been populated for 4000 years by three cultures, all nomadic hunters. Every summer they left the settlement and lived in tents.
Sermermiut area is very important for the local people. We used to celebrate the Greenland National Day on 21st of June in the area. It also used to be hunting place for grouse birds untill few years ago. The flora is still one of most important places for us, because of the black and blue berries in the summertime. The berries are the only natural fruits we have in Greenland.
