Boat Daytour to Knud Rasmussen Glacier and Ikateq Base
Boat daytour visiting the Knud Rasmussen glacier with its blue ice and the old American base Ikateq
The tour starts in Tasiilaq harbour.
We sail to the beautiful Ammassalik Fjord, where we will see narrow and steep mountain peaks.
We sail for about an hour before we encounter these beautiful surroundings in Ammassalik Fjord.
Our first stop is at Ikateq to explore the remains of World War II. It was here that the United States operated an airfield from 1942 to 1947 and the purpose was to have transatlantic air service. You can still see the rusted fuel barrels and old vehicles left behind.
Then we sail on to the northeast and arrive at Sermiligaaq Fjord which means “the beautiful glacier fjord” in Greenlandic. You will be amazed by the jagged mountain peaks and breathtaking scenery.
We also sail past the jagged glacier called the Karale Glacier and to the left you can see the Knud Rasmussen Glacier just ahead. The skipper sails as close as possible to the Knud Rasmussen Glacier and then we go ashore to enjoy our lunch. There will be time to explore on our own and then we board the boat and sail back to Tasiilaq.
