- Exploratory hiking by the icefiord
You can get to Kangersuneq/The Ice Fiord from Nuuk after a lovely boat ride and an hour-long hike. At this point, the Greenland ice cap meets the Nuuk fiord's bottom and fills it with ice that is thousands of years old. Enjoy a warm beverage made over the bonfire while sitting down and listening to the ice melt. calming and unmatched! The surroundings invite you on hikes with views that you'll never forget.
Day 1
A cabin boat will take you from Nuuk to Kapisillit. This is more than just a boat ride—it’s a boat ride through the second-largest fiord system on earth. Beautiful mountains rise straight up from the water’s surface and peak at a height of about 1000 meters. If we’re lucky, we might spot whales, seals, and various seabird species. As you cross the fiord on your way to Kapisillit, there is a lot of history to be revealed.
Docking in the inner bay of Kapisillit (Kangerlupiluk), we will then hike for about three kilometers to our basecamp, which will be located on a peninsula by the lovely ice fiord (Kangersuneq). We’ll settle in and take in the scenery for the remainder of the day.
Total distance: 3 km
Hours of walking: 1-2 hours
Day 2
We begin the day with a hearty breakfast, some coffee or tea, and a breathtaking view of massive mountains rising on either side of the ice fiord as we take in the morning sun. We’ll pack a daypack and head out for a pleasant hike in the direction of the mountain massif Niggu, which rises to nearly 1000 asl. If you are up for it, we can try to climb to the summit to get a bird’s eye view of the area we will be exploring the following days, or we can find a good lunch spot further up the mountain that also offers jaw-dropping views.
If we’re lucky, we might spot some animals like eagles, foxes, snow hares, ptarmigans, and reindeer. We recommend going fishing to try to catch the dinner and to gather some local berries, herbs, and mushrooms back at the basecamp.
The evening will be spent getting ready for the upcoming two days, which include an inland hike and an overnight stop at Lake Qajartoriarsuaq.
Depending on how high we go, the total distance traveled that day will be between 5 and 10 km.
Walking time: 5-7 hours.
Day 3
Today will be spent exploring the inland lakes on foot in the untainted Greenlandic wilderness. The hike will be on a variety of terrain with plenty of time to take in the scenery.
We’ll set up camp once we get to our campsite. Evenings offer the possibility of arctic char fishing or, for those who don’t mind cold water, a refreshing dip in the lake. Another choice is to take a stroll by the lake in the late-afternoon sunshine.
Total distances that day will be around 5-10 km.
Hours of walking: 5-6 hours
Day 4
After breaking camp, we will make a slight detour before turning back toward the mountain massif and leaving the lowlands behind. A mountain top with a cone-shaped shape that is a hidden gem of a viewpoint will be the day’s goal. We’ll have lunch here as well. Lakes surround it, and there is a good chance that visitors will see some wildlife.
After that, we will make our way back to basecamp where we will prepare a feast and, if you remembered the whiskey, a special treat will be receiving a glass with a piece of ice that is millions of years old. We get into our sleeping bags for a restful night’s sleep, ready to share our incredible experiences and tales with others.
Total distances that day will be around 10-15 km.
Hours of walking: 5-6 hours
Day 5
In the past 1000 years, the vikings, also known as the Norse, predominated the warmest fiords in South and West Greenland. And where we will be staying, there is no exception to this. They can still be seen in most places in the Nuuk fiord.
The plan for today is to hike to a lake or natural pool where the Norse once bathed in the summer. The pool has a breathtaking view of the bay and is tucked away among bushes and rocks. You are welcome to take a cold swim in the pool to clear your head and imagine what life was like 1,000 years ago.
Optional:
The closest sheep farmer, who farms sheep in the far north, is nearby, so this would be a good time to say hello and learn more about life there.
The day’s total mileage will be in the range of 7 to 10 km.
Walking time: 6-7 hours
Day 6
We’ll travel along some northwest routes that locals and reindeer have long used. They will lead us to a plateau with a number of options for venturing out into the unknown higher up on higher ground. Once more offering breathtaking views of the ice fiord and a good opportunity to see wildlife like snow hares, ptarmigans, and reindeer.
Total distances that day will be around 7-11 km
Hours of walking: 6-7 hours
Day 7
Following the south side of the bay in Kapisillit until we reach the river close to the village of Kapisillit, we will dismantle the basecamp after the final pictures of our breathtakingly picturesque camp site have been taken. The salmon only enter this river in Greenland to spawn. We’ll make a brief stop here to see if we can try hand-catching arctic char instead! You’re in good hands because the local guide frequently employs this technique.
We hike the final few kilometers to Kapisillit after the fishing to explore this incredibly traditional Greenlandic village. Before we are picked up and board the boat to return to Nuuk, there will be time to chat with the locals.
Total distance that day will be around 8-10 km
Hours of walking: 6-7 hours
