Hvalsey Church

Situated on a verdant meadow in the inner region of Hvalsey Fjord, the Hvalsey Church ruin can be reached by boat in just thirty minutes from Qaqortoq.

The sagas claim that Thorkell Farserk, a relative of Eric the Red, was the one who acquired ownership of the land at Hvalsey.

One of the men who traveled to Greenland with Eric in 985 was Thorkell, who most likely passed away as a heathen as well.

But in the year 1000, Christianity made its way to Greenland, and the Norse quickly began constructing churches at various spots around South Greenland.

The current Hvalsey church ruin is believed to have been constructed in the fourteenth century, but it is from a later era. It is among South America’s best preserved examples of a medieval ruin.

Before returning to the busy town of Qaqortoq, you will have enough of time on the tour to stroll around the ancient site, study the ruins, and take in the serene landscape.

Duration: 2 ½ hours.

Participants: Please note that the excursion will only take place if a minimum of 2 tickets are booked in total. For example, if you book 1 ticket, at least 1 additional ticket must be sold to other customers for the trip to proceed. A maximum of 6 people will participate.
