One of Greenland’s must-do activities!
Representing approximately 79% of Greenland, the Greenlandic ice sheet spans an area of 1,71 million square kilometers (656,000 square miles). It is the largest ice mass in the Northern Hemisphere and the second largest on Earth, with the Antarctic Ice sheet being the largest.
The exceptional chance to walk on this enormous ice sheet and have a glacier hike, discovering the stunning characteristics and breathtaking vistas the glacier has to offer, is only found in Greenland.
This journey lasts for about seven or eight hours, making it an ideal full-day adventure.
At nine in the morning, we leave Tasiilaq for the glacier, where we take a breathtaking boat ride.
The two-hour boat ride is a unique experience in and of itself, giving us the opportunity to take in the breathtaking scenery all around us.
Beautiful fjords, mountain ranges, enormous icebergs, and perhaps even some of Greenland’s amazing animals will pass by as we travel.
Along the journey, if we’re lucky, we might spot seals, orcas, fin whales, and humpback whales!
After the tour starts, our local captain and guide will introduce you to your safety equipment followed by a short walk to the ice’s edge.
Crampons and helmets are included in this.
After that, your guide will carefully accompany you across the glacier and impart all the knowledge you require to walk on the ice.
We’ll move through more daring regions after you’re at ease and with the assistance of your guide.
You will have ample time to truly appreciate this experience and gain an understanding of what people mean when they refer to “the vastness of the ice sheet” as you pass impressive crevasses, admire all the structures and details of the ice, and take in the breathtaking view of the landscape, with the open ocean stretching far out to the horizon on one side and the ice expanding endlessly in one direction.
