Location: Ilulissat
We have six winter months in Ilulissat each year, and wintertime equals “sled-time.” Around 1,800 dogs are utilized for both work and play. The dogs and their sleds bring Greenlandic halibut from the ice fjord to Ilulissat for the long-line fisherman. Even today, the snow scooter cannot compete with the dogsled, a 2,000-year-old Greenlandic form of travel.
We encourage you to participate in the feeding of a dog team on this short excursion. Up to 20 hungry dogs will howl and jump as their owner nears them. The sled, harness, and whip will be demonstrated, and the owner will explain the life of a sled dog in Greenland.
Please note
– Wear something practical. It can be dirty at the dog kennel.
– Maintain a safe distance from the dogs. They are working dogs and do not behave the same way as indoor dogs. You can ask the dog owner which dogs are safe to pet.
– All participants must be at least eight years old.
