Location: Ilulissat
Whales are enormous, and these incredible mammals hold a particular place in Greenlandic culture and historical myths and stories. Witness them as they dive into the ocean’s depths with their tails up!
Whales may be seen in many places around the Greenland coast, and Ilulissat is a great place to observe them! The most common whales you’ll see are humpback whales, which are enormous and powerful, minke whales, which are a little smaller and curious, and fin whales.
The humpback whale is the acrobat among the big whales, despite its size of up to 18 meters and 30 tons. It can turn its tail and fins and fling itself out of the water. It is easily identified by its humped fin and white back on the tail when it dives.
The Ilulissat Icefjord is quite popular with whales because the enormous icebergs and water movements provide ideal circumstances for locating food like fish and krill. The possibilities of seeing whales are also high at Ilimanaq and up north at Arveprinsens Ejland. In addition, we can nearly always find the whales because we have radio contact with Ilulissat’s fishers and other tourism providers.
