Embark on an extraordinary full-day adventure aimed at reaching the Greenland Icecap!
This is a combined boat and hiking tour beginning from Ilulissat at 9 in the morning. Our journey takes us north, navigating towards the remarkable Paakitsoq Fjord. Along the way, we’ll pass the charming settlement of Oqaatsut and hopefully also witness humpback whales busy feeding on capeling at the mouth of the Paakitsoq Fjord.
Initially appearing as a dead end, Paakitsoq Fjord reveals its secrets behind a vast peninsula, unveiling a narrow inlet that leads to an even larger, almost surreal fjord. The green-turquoise waters, colored by silt from the icecap melt, create a mesmerizing spectacle. Approximately 1.5 to 2 hours from Ilulissat, we’ll reach the bottom of the fjord, encountering a serene environment with no other people.
After anchoring the boat, a 4-kilometer hike awaits, culminating in a viewpoint at 600 meters above sea level. Behold an unparalleled 180-degree panorama of the Greenland Icecap and a stunning glacier. Following the hike, we’ll locate a scenic spot for lunch, offering ample time for photography. Depending on group experience and conditions, we may come very close to the icecap.
Subsequently, we’ll trek back to the boat while enjoying the marvelous view of the Paakitsoq Fjord and several smaller glaciers. We’ll be back in Ilulissat by around 5 in the afternoon.
This trip is a demanding trip, and you must be able to walk in hilly and uneven terrain for 4 hours. Bring shoes or boots for hiking, as well as warm clothes, a hat and gloves – It’s cold on the Icefjord even in the summer. Lunch is included on this trip.
Meeting point is at the Tourist pontoon near Tankeeraq (harbour gas station) 15 minutes prior to departure.
Duration: 7 to 8 hours.
Minimum 3 people are required for this to take place.
