The best of East Greenland - Largest town in East Greenland, Tasiilaq - Ice cave - Large icebergs - Glacier - Visit the village - Ikateq, American base - Kulusuk - Taste local, fresh produce
Day 1: Arrival at Kulusuk airport, you will be driven to Kulusuk Hotel. At 2pm, a guide will meet you to take you on an easy hike to Kulusuk settlement and visit to the local museum . At 6pm, dinner is served at the hotel.
Day 2: Breakfast at the hotel. At 10 am departure to the boat waiting- about 20 min boat ride we are at the glacier, here you will be introduced to the equipment and safety before we hike 20 min up to the entrance of the ice cave, a beautiful 40 meter deep cave. After about 1 hour in the cave we hike back to the waiting boat.
In the boat lunch is prepared and we enjoy it at the glacier front, then we sail back to Tasiilaq to get settled in our Hostel – dinner is served by a local chef.
Day 3: after breakfast at 9am everyone meets at the harbour – the boat is ready. We sail about 1.5 hours to the first stop, Ikateq, an abandoned American base from World War II, where the Americans have left old trucks – cranes and other equipment. After about 1.5 hours we return to the boat to sail up to the Knud Rasmussen glacier, at a good distance from the front we go ashore and have lunch, there are about 2 hours to walk and eat or just sit and enjoy the silence, broken by some big bang from the glacier, from ice falling off.
Once it’s around 3pm it’s time to head home. About 2 hours later we are back home in Tasiilaq – for dinner from the local cook.
Day 4: After breakfast we meet at the boat at 9am. After about 1 hour sailing we have our first stop, we go ashore to see an old winter settlement, after looking around the settlement we sail to Tinit settlement with 70 inhabitants, right on the edge of East Greenland’s largest icefjord, lunch is taken right in front of big icebergs.
After about 2 hours in the settlement we sail into the Icefjord out to the open Atlantic, we pass many large icebergs and maybe some whales on our way back to Tasiilaq.
Day 5: Today is a day in Tasiilaq, there is time to do some shopping and we visit the museum and the flower valley and visit the sled dogs. The day ends with a lovely dinner from our local chef.
Day 6: It’s time to say goodbye after 5 very adventurous days, we sail to kulusuk- where your luggage is taken to the airport and you walk up to the airport, we say goodbye at the boat and say thank you for this time.
