In the summer, Greenland is home to a wide variety of whale species, ranging from little whales like porpoises and white-nosed whales to the well-known bowhead whale.
Whales travel north in the summer because they consider the Arctic Sea to be a food source.
A nutrient-rich material formed by the ice churning over rock, ocean currents, and the midnight sun in the Arctic fosters a profusion of planktons and other microscopic fish and shrimp-like creatures called krill.
Because of this, the Nuuk Fjord sees a yearly influx of humpback, fin, and minke whale visitors.
